Looking for a Tanzania 5 day itinerary no climb required? Yes — you can fill three to five days in Northern Tanzania without going anywhere near a summit, by chaining day trips that leave from Moshi or Arusha and bring you back to your hotel each evening. At 2026 rates, the 3-day plan below comes to from $370 per person and the 5-day plan to from $725 per person for a group of five, counting the day trips only. Both mix water, coffee country, culture and at least one national park — separate day trips, not a safari package.
Those figures cover the listed day trips only; accommodation, airport transfers, meals outside each trip’s inclusions, flights and personal costs are separate.
3 days: Materuni Waterfalls → Arusha National Park → Chemka Hot Springs, based in Moshi. 5 days: Chemka → Materuni → Lake Chala hike and canoe → Tarangire → Arusha National Park, moving from Moshi to Arusha once. Totals are cumulative “from” prices for a group of five, not a bundled quote.
Three days suits a short stay or someone waiting for a climbing partner: one park day, two easy days near Moshi. Five days lets you add a second park and a crater lake without back-to-back exhaustion. If the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro crater floor is the real goal, skip this plan and book an overnight safari instead.
Who this itinerary is for
Most Tanzania planning advice assumes one of two trips: a Kilimanjaro climb or a multi-day safari. Plenty of people fit neither. You might be the partner staying in Moshi while someone else climbs — if so, check their dates on the Kilimanjaro group-climb joining calendar and build your own days around them. (If you’re the one climbing, the companion guide covers things to do before and after climbing Kilimanjaro.) You might have a few days before a safari or a Zanzibar flight. Or you simply don’t want to spend a week walking uphill.
This page is a sequencing tool, not a destination guide. Each trip below already has its own detailed article; here you get the order, the logic behind it, and what the days add up to. For everything else on the menu, the full list of Tanzania day trips is the place to browse.
One principle runs through both plans. Pole pole — slowly — is what guides say on Kilimanjaro, and it applies down here too: never stack two long vehicle days when a short water or coffee day could sit between them.
The 3-Day Option
The 3-day plan is Moshi-based and costs from $370 per person for a group of five. It opens with a walking day while your legs are fresh, puts the national park in the middle, and ends with the least demanding trip on the list so a late departure flight is easy to manage. Arusha National Park is the most practical park for a plan this short, because it keeps the vehicle day shorter than a Tarangire or Lake Manyara day.
Materuni Waterfalls & Chagga coffee

A walk through Chagga farmland to the falls, then coffee roasted and ground by hand in the village. It’s the most physically active day of the three, which is why it goes first.
From $85 pp for a group of five · Materuni day trip · what the day involves
Arusha National Park

Your wildlife day, with the option of canoeing and a walking section. Walking in a TANAPA park is done with an armed park ranger. Giraffe, buffalo and flamingo are common here; no specific sighting is ever promised.
From $215 pp for a group of five · Arusha National Park trip · Momella Lakes guide
Chemka Hot Springs

Swimming in spring-fed pools, no hiking, no early game-drive start. The lowest-effort day in the plan. If you fly out the same evening, confirm the return time against your flight when booking.
From $70 pp for a group of five · Chemka day trip · water and visitor guide
Staying in Arusha instead? Flip the plan to the Arusha side: a Maasai Boma visit (from $75 pp), Arusha National Park (from $215 pp), then Tarangire (from $240 pp) — from $530 pp for a group of five. It’s more wildlife and less water. Torn between the Moshi-side water days? Compare Materuni and Chemka side by side, or weigh Lake Chala against Chemka. If you want a gentle half-day to pad any plan, Lake Duluti near Arusha is covered in the lesser-known day trips guide.
The 5-Day Option
The 5-day Northern Tanzania itinerary without a climb costs from $725 per person for a group of five and uses one base change: three nights on the Moshi side, then Arusha for the two park days. Water and walking come first, the long safari day comes once you’ve recovered from the flight, and we place the shorter park day last so you’re not wrung out before travelling on.
Base change: after Day 3, move from Moshi to Arusha and sleep there the night before Tarangire.
Chemka Hot Springs — arrival recovery
Long-haul legs and jet lag want warm water, not a trail. Chemka is one of the easiest starts in this itinerary.
From $70 pp for a group of five
Materuni Waterfalls & coffee
Now you’re rested enough for the walk down to the falls and the coffee session afterwards. Wet-season paths get slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
From $85 pp for a group of five
Lake Chala hike & canoe — or a Kilimanjaro day hike

A trail down the rim of Lake Chala, a volcanic crater lake, then time in a canoe. Prefer mountain over lake? Swap in the Marangu Kilimanjaro day hike ($275 pp private, $215 pp joining) — you walk the rainforest to Mandara Hut on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, inside the UNESCO-listed Kilimanjaro National Park, and come back down the same day. That’s standing on the mountain, not climbing it.
Lake Chala: from $115 pp for a group of five · hike & canoe trip · Mandara Hut day-hike guide
Tarangire National Park

The longest vehicle day of the five, and the reason to move to Arusha the evening before rather than drive from Moshi at dawn. Tarangire is known for elephants and baobabs; Lake Manyara is the same price if you’d rather have the lake and forest.
From $240 pp for a group of five · Tarangire day safari · Tarangire or Manyara?
Arusha National Park — or a lighter cultural day
A shorter park day close to town. If Tarangire left you tired (it often does), trade it for a Maasai Boma visit from $75 pp or a day in Arusha city from $75 pp before flying out of ARK or JRO.
From $215 pp for a group of five
The pacing logic
- Easy day first, while jet lag is at its worst.
- Walking days before the long drive, not after.
- Only one base change, made the evening before the longest day.
- Shortest park last, with a lighter swap ready.
How to Combine Moshi and Arusha Departures
Split your stay by geography: Moshi for the Kilimanjaro-slope trips (waterfalls, hot springs, Lake Chala, Marangu), Arusha for the parks west of it (Arusha National Park, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) and the Maasai and city days. The two towns sit on the same main road with Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) between them (Arusha Airport, ARK, handles smaller domestic flights on the Arusha side), so one move in the middle of your trip costs far less time than commuting from a single base to everything.
Move in the direction of your departure airport. Flying out of ARK? Finish on the Arusha side. Flying out of JRO, either town works, because the airport sits between them. For pickup options and layover logistics, see the JRO transfer guide, and compare the full menus in the Moshi day-trip roundup and the Arusha day-trip roundup.

Two things don’t fit this framework. The Ngorongoro Crater floor is a much bigger day than anything above — read whether Ngorongoro works as a day trip before adding it. And the Serengeti is not a day trip at all.
Cumulative Cost Planning
Add the per-person price of each day at your group size and you have your planning total: $370 (3 days) or $725 (5 days) per person for five people, rising to $580 and $1,175 for one person travelling alone. These are example sums of separate day trips, not a package price. They exclude accommodation, flights, visas, tips and travel insurance; what each trip price includes (park entry, lunch, pickup) is set out on each product page and confirmed when you book.
| Plan | 1 person | 2 people | 3 people | 4 people | 5 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-day: Materuni + Arusha NP + Chemka | $580 | $490 | $430 | $395 | $370 |
| 3-day Arusha side: Maasai Boma + Arusha NP + Tarangire | $865 | $720 | $630 | $570 | $530 |
| 5-day: Chemka + Materuni + Lake Chala H&C + Tarangire + Arusha NP | $1,175 | $980 | $860 | $780 | $725 |

Why group size moves the number so much
A private day trip has fixed costs — one vehicle, one guide, one driver — shared by everyone in it. That’s why the 5-day plan costs $450 less per person for five people than for one. Solo travellers can close some of that gap by joining a shared departure where one exists; the trade-offs are laid out in private versus joining day trips, and the full pricing picture lives in the Tanzania day-trip cost breakdown.
Timing matters too, but it changes conditions more than prices. For month-by-month conditions, see the day-trip seasonality guide. Five different trip types also means five different kit lists — the packing list by trip type sorts swimwear days from game-drive days.
- All prices are quoted in US dollars per person.
- Park rules and entry requirements for the national-park days are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA); the Marangu day hike falls under Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA).
- Travel insurance that covers activities such as canoeing and hiking is worth arranging before you fly — providers such as World Nomads list what their policies include.
- Whoever you book with, check that the operator is properly registered and licensed in Tanzania; the guide to choosing a Tanzania operator covers what to ask.
Sabinus Msimba’s Note From the Field
The first plan people send me usually has a park on every day. It looks efficient on paper. By the second long drive, though, half the vehicle is asleep before the gate, and you’ve paid park rates to watch the inside of your eyelids.
So I change two things. I move people to Arusha the evening before Tarangire, not at dawn on the day — you arrive at the park with the morning still ahead of you instead of spending it on the road. And I put a water or coffee day between any two long drives. Chemka after a travel day. Materuni before the parks, while legs are fresh.
The plan with fewer parks is often the one people talk about afterwards. For a group of five on the 5-day plan, dropping Arusha National Park for a Maasai Boma visit on the last day saves $140 each — and gives you a slower final morning before the flight.

Who Should Choose Something Else
Day-trip itineraries suit variety and a hotel bed every night. They are the wrong tool if your priority is depth in one ecosystem or the Serengeti.
| Factor | Day-trip itinerary (this guide) | Overnight safari |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | Same hotel in Moshi or Arusha each night | Lodge or camp near the parks |
| Parks within reach | Arusha NP, Tarangire, Lake Manyara | Adds Serengeti and a full Ngorongoro crater day |
| Variety | Waterfalls, hot springs, culture and parks | Mostly game drives |
| Flexibility | Swap or drop any single day | Fixed route once booked |
This plan works well if you…
- have 3–5 days and aren’t climbing
- are waiting in Moshi while a partner climbs
- want a mix of water, culture and one or two parks
- are travelling with children (see day trips that work for families)
Consider something else if you…
- want the Serengeti or the Great Migration — look at overnight safari packages
- want beach days — see Zanzibar beach options
- have limited mobility — read the accessible day-trip guide first
- actually want to climb — start at Mount Kilimanjaro climbing
Tanzania 5 Day Itinerary No Climb: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I spend five days in Northern Tanzania without climbing Kilimanjaro?
Yes. Five day trips from Moshi and Arusha — Chemka Hot Springs, Materuni Waterfalls, Lake Chala, Tarangire and Arusha National Park — fill five days with a hotel bed every night. At 2026 rates that plan comes to from $725 per person for a group of five, counting the day trips only. There is no Kilimanjaro summit climb or camping in this itinerary; park and activity fees depend on each day trip.
How much does a 5-day Northern Tanzania itinerary cost without a climb?
Using Kilimania’s 2026 day-trip rates, the 5-day plan in this guide totals $725 per person for five people, $980 each for two, and $1,175 for one person travelling alone. These are sums of separate private day trips, not a package price, and exclude accommodation, flights, tips and insurance.
Is three days enough for Northern Tanzania?
Three days is enough for one national park plus two lighter days, such as Materuni Waterfalls, Arusha National Park and Chemka Hot Springs, from $370 per person for a group of five. It is not enough for the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater floor, which need an overnight safari to be worthwhile.
Should I stay in Moshi or Arusha?
For a mixed itinerary, stay in both. Moshi is closer to Materuni, Chemka, Lake Chala and Marangu; Arusha is closer to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park and the Maasai Boma. Make one move, ideally the evening before your longest park day, and finish in the town nearest your departure airport.
Can I do Tarangire as a day trip from Moshi?
It is possible, but it makes for a very long day because Tarangire sits well beyond Arusha. In a multi-day plan it is more comfortable to sleep in Arusha the night before. On a short Moshi-based stay, Arusha National Park is the closer park and a shorter vehicle day.
What can I do in Moshi while my partner climbs Kilimanjaro?
Build your own run of day trips around their climb dates: Chemka Hot Springs, Materuni Waterfalls, Lake Chala, Marangu Waterfalls, and one park day at Arusha National Park or Tarangire. Check their departure on the Kilimanjaro joining calendar first so your final day in town lines up with their descent.
Can I combine waterfalls and a safari in one short trip?
Yes — that is exactly what both plans here do. Put the waterfall walk (Materuni or Marangu) before the park day while your legs are fresh, and keep an easy day such as Chemka Hot Springs or a Maasai Boma visit between any two long vehicle days.
Putting Your Days Together
You don’t need a summit or a week in a tent to see Northern Tanzania properly. Three days from $370 per person for five people covers coffee country, a national park and hot springs; five days from $725 adds a crater lake and Tarangire. Keep one base change, a light day between long drives, and finish near your airport. Start with the day-trip hub to pick your swaps. We Walk With You — every step, even the flat ones.
