A private trip has costs that don’t change with headcount (the vehicle, the fuel, the driver-guide’s day) and costs charged for each traveller. The first kind gets split more ways in a bigger group. The second kind doesn’t.
Materuni Waterfalls shows it clearly. Two people pay $110 each, $220 in total. Five people pay $85 each, $425 in total. The group spends more overall, yet each person saves $25 on the day.

What Drives the Price Difference Between Trips?
Three variables explain much of the price difference: whether the trip enters a national park, how long the day on the road is, and how many people share it. Activity costs play a part too, such as the canoe session at Lake Chala or the armed ranger escort on Mount Meru.
Park entry fees — why safari parks cost more
Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park are run by TANAPA, which charges conservation fees for each visitor who enters. Chemka, Maasai Boma, Materuni and Marangu village all sit outside national park boundaries, so those park charges don’t apply.
You can see this in the rate table without knowing the fee itself. Adding a fifth person to a Chemka booking raises the group total by $50 ($300 to $350). Adding a fifth person to Tarangire raises it by $160 ($1,040 to $1,200). That difference is the per-head part of a safari day, and national park conservation fees are one important component of it. Chemka is a far shorter run from Moshi. One common mix-up is worth clearing up here: Chemka’s water is roughly 27°C, warm rather than hot. “Chemka” means “boiling” in Swahili and describes how the water bubbles up from the ground, not its temperature.
