If you are looking for unique day trips in Northern Tanzania beyond the usual loop of Kilimanjaro day hikes, waterfalls, hot springs and park safaris, Lake Duluti, Mto wa Mbu, Rau Forest and Longido Mountain are four of the most useful places to understand. They are not interchangeable: Duluti is a forested crater lake outside Arusha, Mto wa Mbu is a farming town on the safari highway, Rau is a groundwater forest on the edge of Moshi, and Longido is a steep mountain in Maasai country toward the Kenya border.

None of the four is currently a standard Kilimania day-trip product. This guide explains what each place is, who it suits, and what to book instead if you want a trip we run ourselves.

Quick Answer

Unique day trips in Northern Tanzania beyond the standard circuit include four distinct types of outing. Lake Duluti near Tengeru is a short lake-and-forest visit for birders and walkers. Mto wa Mbu is a cultural and farming town that works well as a stop on the way to Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro. Rau Forest is a flat forest walk on the edge of Moshi. Longido is a demanding mountain hike north of Arusha.

What Makes These Unique Day Trips in Northern Tanzania Different?

Most day-trip lists group everything under “things to do.” That hides the real choice, which is about the type of day you want. Each type has a different cost in driving time, fees and effort.

  • Lake outing (Duluti): generally a shorter nature outing, mostly birds and forest. It is not a national-park game drive, although reserve entry and activity fees apply.
  • Cultural and livelihood landscape (Mto wa Mbu): people, farms, food and crafts. The value is in conversation and context, not scenery.
  • Forest outing (Rau): mostly flat walking under a closed canopy, with monkeys and old trees. Close to town and generally a low-demand walk.
  • Mountain outing (Longido): real ascent and a long day. Closer to a training hike than a sightseeing trip.
  • Park safari: vehicle-based game viewing inside a national park, with park fees and longer drives.
  • Waterfall or hot spring: a set destination with water at the end, usually combined with a village walk or a swim.
  • Kilimanjaro day hike: a walk inside Kilimanjaro National Park, on the mountain itself, under park rules.

Choose the type first, then the place. Conditions vary by destination and month; for the full planning calendar, see our month-by-month guide to day-trip timing.

Lake Duluti

What Lake Duluti is

Lake Duluti is a crater lake in Arumeru District, Arusha Region, protected inside the Lake Duluti Forest Reserve and managed by the Tanzania Forest Services Agency. TFS places it about 14 km from Arusha city centre and 1.3 km from Tengeru town, on the lower ground east of Mount Meru.

According to TFS, the reserve covers roughly 86 hectares, most of it the lake itself, which has no surface inlet or outlet. The agency records 104 bird species, including fish eagles, ospreys, cormorants, grey herons and kingfishers. Listed activities are canoeing, sport fishing, birdwatching, forest walks and camping, plus a viewpoint toward Kilimanjaro, Meru and Arusha.

Who Lake Duluti suits

Lake Duluti fits travellers who want a short nature-focused outing rather than a full national-park safari. Birders do well here, especially early. So do people staying in Arusha, Tengeru or Usa River with a free half day, or anyone who wants a quiet morning between a long flight and a safari.

What to consider before going

  • Tengeru sits on the Moshi–Arusha highway, the same road that serves Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From Moshi, visiting Duluti means covering most of the Moshi–Arusha corridor before you reach Tengeru.
  • Swimming is not among the activities TFS lists. TFS also names green mambas among the reserve’s reptiles, so stay on marked paths.
  • Entry and canoe charges are set locally and change. Confirm them with the reserve office in Tengeru before you plan around them.

Who should choose something else

If you want to swim, clear spring water at Chemka Hot Springs fits far better. If you want a lake day with a longer walk and a paddle on the Moshi side of the region, look at Lake Chala hiking and canoeing. If you want big game, Duluti will not deliver it; a park safari will.

Mto wa Mbu

What Mto wa Mbu is known for

Mto wa Mbu is a town and ward in Monduli District, Arusha Region. The name means “river of mosquitoes” in Swahili. It sits at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment, beside the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park, on the highway that carries safari vehicles toward Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Banana farming dominates the land around town. A community-based cultural tourism programme, documented by the UNDP Equator Initiative, runs guided village walks, plantation visits, craft workshops, cycling routes and meals cooked by local women’s groups. The programme says people from more than 120 ethnic groups live in the town.

Who Mto wa Mbu suits

Mto wa Mbu makes sense for travellers interested in how people farm, trade and live, rather than in a staged performance. It suits anyone already driving to Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro or the Serengeti who can spare a few hours. It also suits food-curious travellers and cyclists who prefer flat village tracks to game drives.

What to consider before going

  • Distance is the main limit. The town sits well over 100 km west of Arusha by road, and starting in Moshi adds the whole Moshi–Arusha leg. As a stand-alone day from Moshi, most of the day is driving.
  • Arrange a guide through the cultural tourism office rather than through whoever approaches you on the roadside, and agree the fee before you start.
  • The name is a fair warning. Bring repellent and long sleeves for late-afternoon walks.

Who should choose something else

If you want wildlife, Mto wa Mbu is a town, not a park; pair it with Lake Manyara or look at a Tanzania safari instead. If your interest is specifically Maasai culture, a Maasai boma visit is more focused. If you are based in Moshi and want a cultural day without the long drive, Materuni’s coffee and waterfall walk in Chagga country is far closer.

Rau Forest

What Rau Forest offers

Rau Forest is a different type of outing: a lowland forest you can reach in minutes from Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region. It is a nature forest reserve managed by TFS, which places the entry gate about 2 km from Moshi town. It is a groundwater forest, fed by springs rather than rain-fed mountain streams.

TFS lists black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys, dik-dik, more than 15 bird species, butterflies and rice fields along the forest edge. The reserve is known for its large mvule (Milicia excelsa) trees, one of which the reserve’s TFS page describes as the biggest tree in East Africa, and for the rare tree Oxystigma msoo. Walking and cycling are the main ways to visit.

Who Rau Forest suits

Rau suits travellers based in Moshi with a spare morning or afternoon, families who want an easy walk, cyclists, and anyone resting before or after a climb who wants to move without climbing. The terrain is mostly flat and the altitude is low, so the walk is much less demanding than a mountain hike.

What to consider before going

  • Because it is a groundwater forest, some paths stay damp and muddy after rain. Closed shoes help more than hiking boots.
  • Monkeys are common here, but no forest walk can promise a sighting. Early and late in the day are quieter.
  • An entrance fee is paid at the gate. Confirm the current amount locally.

Who should choose something else

If you want a waterfall, Rau has none; see our overview of waterfalls near Moshi, including Materuni and Marangu Waterfalls. If you want to walk in Kilimanjaro’s own montane forest, the Marangu day hike inside the national park is the right choice. If you want to swim, choose Chemka.

Longido Mountain

What Longido offers

Longido Mountain rises beside the Arusha–Namanga road in Longido District, Arusha Region, north of Arusha and short of the Kenya border at Namanga. The surrounding plains are Maasai grazing country. Hikes are usually arranged in Longido town through the Longido Cultural Tourism Enterprise, which provides local Maasai guides.

The climb leaves dry bush on the lower slopes and passes into forest higher up. From the summit, clear days give views across the Maasai steppe toward Kenya, and toward Kilimanjaro and Meru. Many hikers split the ascent with a night on the mountain; a single-day summit is a long, steep day.

Who Longido suits

Longido is more appropriate for fit hikers who want real ascent outside the national-park system, and for climbers who want a conditioning day before climbing Kilimanjaro. It also suits travellers who want to walk with Maasai guides on their own land rather than visit a boma as spectators.

What to consider before going

  • Start early. The lower slopes are exposed and hot by late morning, so carry all the water you need.
  • Route, guide and fees are set by the local enterprise and can change. Confirm them directly before you commit a day.
  • Longido town is before the border post, so you do not cross into Kenya to hike. Carry identification anyway on a border road.

Who should choose something else

If you want an easy walk, choose Rau or Duluti. If you want a guided mountain day with a Kilimania guide, the Mount Meru day trip inside Arusha National Park is the confirmed option. If your aim is Kilimanjaro itself, a Shira Plateau day hike puts you on the mountain at altitude.

How These Four Destinations Compare

The table sets the four side by side on character, fit and planning. None of them is ranked above another; each answers a different kind of day.

For These Destinations, Here Is What We Recommend

There are two lists to keep separate. The first is places worth knowing about: Duluti, Mto wa Mbu, Rau and Longido. They are real, reachable and useful, but Kilimania does not currently list any of them as a standard day-trip product, and we would rather say so than sell you a day we have not built properly.

The second list is the day trips we do run, with set routes, guides and prices. Those live on our Tanzania day trips hub, which is the only place to check what is currently bookable. If you are choosing by where you are staying, our guides to day trips from Moshi and day trips from Arusha narrow the options quickly. For what different kinds of day cost, see the Tanzania day trip cost guide, and if you are comparing operators, our guide to choosing a tour operator in Tanzania sets out what to check.

Why are these four not Kilimania products? A standard day trip needs agreed arrangements with the reserve or community programme, tested timings and a guide assigned to the route. We have not built that for these places, so we point you to them rather than sell them.

From a logistics point of view, Duluti and Rau work as shorter outings on a free half day, Mto wa Mbu fits naturally into a safari route, and Longido needs a dedicated hiking day.

What to Choose Instead If You Want a Confirmed Kilimania Day Trip

If one of the four appealed to you for a specific reason, this is the closest trip we currently run for that same reason. Prices are per person for a group of five, from Kilimania’s 2026 price table; the product page has the full breakdown.

Some travellers weigh a single day hike against committing to a full climb. If that is you, Kilimania’s Kilimanjaro joining calendar shows the scheduled group departures, so you can see whether a climb fits your dates before choosing between the two.

Sabinus Msimba — Note from the Field

Before you pick one of these four, put them on a map. They sit on four different roads. Rau is on the southern edge of Moshi. Duluti is off the Moshi–Arusha highway near Tengeru. Mto wa Mbu is far to the west on the safari road below the Rift escarpment. Longido is north of Arusha on the Namanga road. For most travellers, combining two of them in one day means a long driving day and too little time at each. Rau and Duluti are the only pair on the same corridor.

That shapes how I would use them. Rau and Duluti are low and flat, so they fit a rest day either side of a climb. Longido is a training day, not a rest day. Mto wa Mbu belongs inside a safari itinerary, where you are passing through anyway. Match the place to the day you already have, and the trip works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some unusual day trips in Northern Tanzania?

Four useful options beyond the standard circuit are Lake Duluti, a crater lake near Tengeru outside Arusha; Mto wa Mbu, a farming town beside Lake Manyara National Park; Rau Forest, a groundwater forest on the edge of Moshi; and Longido Mountain, a steep hike in Maasai country north of Arusha. Each offers a different type of day, from easy lake and forest walks to a demanding mountain ascent.

Is Lake Duluti worth visiting as a day trip?

Lake Duluti works well as a half-day visit rather than a full day. The Tanzania Forest Services Agency lists canoeing, birdwatching, forest walks and a viewpoint toward Kilimanjaro and Meru, and records 104 bird species in the reserve. It suits travellers staying near Arusha or Tengeru. From Moshi it is most of the way to Arusha, so combine it with other plans.

What is there to do in Mto wa Mbu?

Mto wa Mbu’s community cultural tourism programme runs guided village walks, banana plantation visits, craft workshops, cycling routes and meals cooked by local women’s groups. The town sits beside the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park, so most visitors stop there on the way to Manyara, Ngorongoro or the Serengeti rather than making a separate trip.

Can you visit Rau Forest from Moshi?

Yes. Rau Forest is a nature forest reserve on the edge of Moshi town, and the Tanzania Forest Services Agency places its entry gate about 2 km from town. The walking is flat, with colobus and blue monkeys, a large mvule tree and rice fields along the edge. An entrance fee is paid at the gate, so confirm the current amount locally.

Is Longido Mountain suitable for a day trip?

Longido can be summited in one long day by fit hikers, but many people split the ascent with a night on the mountain. Hikes start from Longido town, north of Arusha on the Namanga road, where the local cultural tourism programme arranges guides. Start early, carry all your water, and confirm the route and fees before you go.

Which of these Northern Tanzania day trips has a cultural focus?

Mto wa Mbu is primarily a cultural visit, because the day centres on farms, crafts, food and conversation with residents. Longido adds Maasai context because local Maasai guides lead the hike. Lake Duluti and Rau Forest are nature outings with little cultural content.

Which Northern Tanzania day trips work if I do not want a safari?

Lake Duluti, Rau Forest and Longido involve no game drive at all. Among confirmed Kilimania trips, Materuni Waterfalls, Marangu Waterfalls, Chemka Hot Springs, the Maasai Boma visit and the Kilimanjaro day hikes are all non-safari options. The Tanzania day trips hub lists every trip Kilimania currently runs.

Does Kilimania run day trips to Duluti, Mto wa Mbu, Rau Forest or Longido?

No. Kilimania does not currently list Lake Duluti, Mto wa Mbu, Rau Forest or Longido as standard day-trip products. This article covers them as regional knowledge. For trips Kilimania does run, with set routes and prices, see the Tanzania day trips hub at kilimania.co.tz/tanzania-day-trips/.

Final Takeaway

Duluti, Mto wa Mbu, Rau and Longido are four different answers to four different questions: a quiet lake, a working town, a flat forest and a hard mountain. Pick by the kind of day you want and where you are staying, not by the name. For the trips Kilimania runs itself, start with the confirmed day-trip list. We Walk With You.
