Lake Chala vs Chemka: if you searched for a swimming day trip, Chemka is your answer. Lake Chala has crocodiles in the water. It is a crater hike and canoe day, and this guide keeps the two apart.
Data sources cited in this article: Kilimania’s 2026 day-trip price schedule (private trips from Moshi, per person); Kilimania guiding experience at both sites; Chemka water temperature from Kilimania’s destination records; the 2002 Lake Chala crocodile death as reported by The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph.

Lake Chala vs Chemka comes down to one fact: only one of them is a swimming day trip. Chemka Hot Springs is where you swim, in clear spring-fed water at about 27°C. Lake Chala is a crater-lake hike with optional canoeing, and crocodiles live in the lake, so nobody should plan to swim there. Kilimania’s 2026 prices for private trips from Moshi start from $70 pp for Chemka, $95 pp for Lake Chala and $115 pp for Lake Chala with canoeing, each for a group of five.
First — An Important Distinction About Swimming
Many travel lists put Lake Chala and Chemka side by side under “water day trips from Moshi.” It’s an easy mistake to make. Both have water in every photo, both are a day out from town, and both look inviting. Only one of them invites you in.
Lake Chala is a crater lake on the Tanzania–Kenya border, east of Moshi, with steep walls dropping to deep green water. Crocodiles are present in the lake. In March 2002 an 18-year-old British student was killed by a crocodile while swimming there at night, as The Guardian reported at the time. That is why we plan every Lake Chala day as a hike and, if you choose it, a guided canoe on the surface. Never a swim. This isn’t a scare line; it’s a planning line.
Chemka Hot Springs, also known as Kikuletwa, sits west of Moshi. The name confuses people too: chemka means “boiling” in Swahili, but it describes the way the water pushes up and bubbles through the spring floor, not its heat. The water is about 27°C (warm like a heated pool, not hot), clear enough to see the bottom in the shallows, and swimming is what the day is built around.
Lake Chala vs Chemka: Side-by-Side Comparison

Choose Chemka If…
- You want to swim. That alone settles it. Chemka is Kilimania’s swimming-focused day trip from Moshi.
- You’re travelling with young children or non-hikers. The walk to the water is short, with much less walking than the Lake Chala crater trail. For seniors and low-mobility travellers, the accessible day trips guide compares the gentler options.
- You want a lower-effort day. After a Kilimanjaro climb or a long safari drive, some guests prefer Chemka because the main activity is swimming rather than another hike.
- You want a slow, social day. Swim, sit in the shade of the fig trees, swim again.
- Budget matters. Chemka has the lowest starting price of the three trips compared here. The Tanzania day trip cost guide sets it against the other Moshi and Arusha trips.
For water depth, facilities and what the springs look like hour by hour, the Chemka Hot Springs visitor guide goes into detail. If you’re weighing Chemka against a waterfall day instead, the Materuni vs Chemka comparison covers that choice.
Choose Lake Chala If…
- You want a crater lake. Nothing else on the Moshi day-trip list gives you steep crater walls wrapped around deep green water.
- You want to walk. The trail down to the shore and back up is a real hike, moderate rather than technical.
- You want to paddle. On the canoeing option you’re out on the lake with a guide, looking back up at the rim.
- You carry a camera. The crater view from the rim and the low angle from a canoe are two very different pictures of the same lake. The photography day trips guide covers light and timing.
- You accept that there’s no swimming. Crocodiles are present. If that changes your mind, Chemka is the right trip, and that’s a perfectly good outcome.
The Lake Chala day trip guide covers the crater, the border setting and the trail. For the paddle itself, read what to expect on the Lake Chala hike and canoeing day.
Lake Chala and Chemka Prices by Group Size
These are private-trip rates from Moshi, priced per person. The per-person rate drops as your group grows, so a solo traveller and a family of five pay very different amounts for the same day. Where a shared or joining departure is offered, it is priced separately on the trip page; the private vs joining day trips guide explains the difference.
| Trip | 1 person | 2 people | 3 people | 4 people | 5 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chemka Hot Springs | $110 | $90 | $80 | $75 | $70 |
| Lake Chala (hike) | $155 | $130 | $115 | $105 | $95 |
| Lake Chala + canoeing | $185 | $155 | $140 | $125 | $115 |

Worked example: two friends choosing Chemka pay $90 each, $180 together. The same two on Lake Chala with canoeing pay $155 each, $310 together. The $130 difference reflects a different kind of day: Chemka is built around swimming, while Lake Chala adds a crater hike and canoeing. Choose by the activity you want, not the total.

Who Should Choose Something Else
Neither trip is right for everyone. Be honest about what you want from the day:
- You want wildlife, not water. Neither site is a game-viewing day. The Arusha National Park safari day trip is the closer fit, run under the park authority, Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).
- You want waterfalls and village life. A Materuni waterfalls and coffee day or a Marangu waterfalls and Chagga cultural day puts you on the Kilimanjaro foothills instead. If a swim under falling water is the point, check the guide to waterfalls near Moshi first.
- You want a cultural visit. The Maasai Boma day trip is about people and daily life, not scenery.
- You only have half a day. Both Chala and Chemka fill a full day. Lake Duluti near Arusha is a shorter, easier lake walk if time is tight, or stay in town with a day in Moshi town.
- You want to swim in a crater lake. We do not plan swimming at Lake Chala. Chemka is our swimming-focused day.
Sabinus’s Note From the Trail
- Who
- Guests booked on Lake Chala who had read lists grouping it with Chemka as a “swimming day.”
- When
- At pickup in Moshi, before we’ve even left town. That’s where the swimwear shows up.
- What I see
- People expecting a swim at Chala. So the first conversation of the day isn’t about the view. It’s about the crocodiles, and the choice: keep the crater walk and the canoe, or switch to a Chemka day and swim.
- Why it matters
- I’d much rather you learn this here than in the car park. Chala rewards people who come for the walk. Chemka rewards people who come for the water. Mix them up and a good day goes flat before it starts.
My honest answer when someone asks which is “better”: they aren’t competing. Different day, different kit, different reason for going. Walk Chala pole pole (slowly) on the way back up; the rim climb is where people who rushed the descent feel it. And at Chemka, karibu, get in. That’s what it’s for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you swim in Lake Chala?
No. Crocodiles are present in Lake Chala, and in March 2002 an 18-year-old British student was killed by a crocodile while swimming in the lake at night, as reported by The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. Kilimania plans Lake Chala as a crater hike with optional canoeing, never as a swim. If swimming is the goal of your day, choose Chemka Hot Springs instead.
Are there crocodiles in Lake Chala?
Yes. Crocodiles are present in the lake, which is why swimming is not part of any Lake Chala day trip we run. You can still hike the crater and, on the canoeing option, paddle on the surface with a guide. Follow your guide’s instructions at the water’s edge.
Is Chemka Hot Springs suitable for swimming?
Yes. Swimming is the main activity at Chemka and the reason Kilimania runs it as a swimming-focused day trip. Depth varies across the pools, so non-swimmers and children should stay in the shallower edges and within reach of an adult, and everyone should follow site and guide instructions.
How hot is the water at Chemka Hot Springs?
About 27°C, warm like a heated pool rather than hot. "Chemka" means "boiling" in Swahili, but the name describes how the water bubbles up through the spring floor, not its temperature. Most visitors stay in the water comfortably for long stretches.
Can I do Lake Chala and Chemka in one day?
Not in a way we would recommend. Chemka is west of Moshi and Lake Chala is east of Moshi, towards the Tanzania–Kenya border, and each one is a full day on its own. If you want both, book them on separate days, for example Chemka after a climb and Lake Chala once your legs have recovered.
Which is better for families, Lake Chala or Chemka?
For younger children, Chemka is usually the easier fit: the walk to the water is short and the day centres on swimming. Lake Chala suits older children who can manage the crater trail down to the water and back up, and who understand that the lake is for looking and paddling, not swimming.
Do I have to hike at Lake Chala, or can I just canoe?
The canoe trip includes the hike, because the water sits at the bottom of the crater and the trail is how you reach it. Expect a walk down to the shore and a steady climb back up to the rim. If walking on a slope is a problem, Chemka is the gentler day.
How much does Lake Chala cost compared to Chemka?
For a private group of five from Moshi, Chemka starts from $70 per person, Lake Chala from $95 per person, and Lake Chala with canoeing from $115 per person. Smaller private groups pay more per person; the group-size table in this article shows every private rate from one to five travellers.
What should I wear to Lake Chala if I’m not swimming?
Dress for a crater walk, not a beach: closed shoes with grip, light layers, a hat and sunscreen, and water to carry. Leave the swimwear for Chemka. On the canoeing option, clothes that can get splashed make sense, and a small dry bag helps protect a phone or camera.
