Here is what happens in your body that most articles never explain. Kilimanjaro National Park — managed by KINAPA and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — rises to 5,895 metres, where each breath delivers roughly 50% of the oxygen molecules you would get at sea level. Your body has compensation mechanisms, but none of them are immediate.

In the first 24–48 hours above 3,000m, your kidneys adjust fluid and bicarbonate balance, your breathing rate increases, and your heart rate rises. These acute responses partially compensate for reduced oxygen — but only partially.

From 48–96 hours onward, erythropoietin production rises, triggering red blood cell production. Your haemoglobin begins shifting its oxygen-binding curve to release oxygen more readily in thin air.
