The 6 Days Rongai Route offers a quieter and more gradual ascent on Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the remote northern side near the Kenya border. With an extra acclimatization day compared to the 5-day option, this itinerary provides a better summit success rate while still maintaining a peaceful trekking experience.

Day 0: Pre-Climb Briefing & Gear Check (Hotel Day)

Location: Moshi Town

A full pre-climb briefing prepares you for a safe and successful Rongai Route climb.

Briefing Includes:

Overnight at your hotel in Moshi.

Drive to Nalemoru Gate near the Kenyan border. Trek through farmland and pine forest with chances to spot wildlife. Overnight at Simba Camp.

  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

A steady ascent across open moorland with beautiful views of Mawenzi Peak. The gradual pace aids acclimatization.

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

A shorter but steeper climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, set beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi. This scenic camp is ideal for altitude adaptation.

Cross the wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut early to rest and prepare for summit night.

Early dinner and final summit briefing.

Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Ascend to Gilman’s Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Summiting Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route offers incredible solitude and views.

Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.
