Safety and suitability

  • Wear closed shoes and use repellent at the forest edge.
  • Wildlife is recorded at Rau, but sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Agree a bajaji fare before you set off. Bodaboda motorbikes carry the highest accident risk.
  • Use a taxi after dark or with shopping. The centre is walkable in the morning.
  • Ask before photographing people at the market.
  • If you are tired, ill or dehydrated after a descent, tell us. This tour is not the right choice then.

Children are welcome on many vehicle-based day trips, but hiking, walking safaris, canoeing and mountain activities have different safety requirements. Confirm your child’s age with Kilimania before booking. See also day trips with kids.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Moshi town half-day tour guided or self-guided?

A Kilimania guide walks the half-day with you, covering the town centre, the central market, local history and a coffee stop. It is private, so the pace follows your group. Prefer to go alone? A self-guided route is possible, and our Moshi town guide lists each stop.

How much does a Moshi town half-day tour cost?

A private group of five pays $20 per person ($100 total). One traveller pays $50, two pay $35 each ($70), three pay $30 each ($90) and four pay $25 each ($100). Hotel pick-up, transport, a local guide and a coffee are included. Add-ons are quoted before you proceed.

Can I see Kilimanjaro from Moshi town?

Often, on clear days, and mainly in the morning. Kibo is usually clearest from first light until cloud builds around mid-morning, and June to October is the clearest season. Cloud can hide the mountain for days, so a view is never promised.

How long is the walk at Rau Forest?

Plan about 1 to 2 hours on foot at Rau Forest, roughly 3 km from the town centre, or about 1 hour at Njoro Forest. Wear closed shoes and use repellent. Black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys and Kirk’s dik-dik are recorded there, but sightings are not promised.

Is a Moshi town half-day a good rest day around a Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes. The walking is easy and flat to gentle. Before a climb, keep the morning short and save your legs. After a climb, a slow morning with coffee and a market walk works well, unless you are tired, ill or dehydrated after the descent.

Does the tour include a coffee farm visit?

No. The coffee stop is a sit-down tasting in town and takes under an hour. Picking cherries on a farm is a separate half-day or full-day trip, covered by the Materuni waterfalls and coffee day trip.

Can I swim on the Moshi town tour?

No. Moshi town has no swimming stop, and there are no waterfalls on this route. If you want to swim, the Chemka Hot Springs day trip is the better match. This tour is for views, coffee, a market and a forest walk.

Is hotel pick-up included in the Moshi town tour?

Yes. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Moshi are included, along with transport during the tour where needed. The compact town centre is walked with your guide in the morning. Your exact pick-up time is confirmed in your quote according to your hotel and travel date.
