Quick answer

The Marangu Waterfalls and Cultural Day Trip is a private day trip from Moshi or Arusha to Ndoro Falls, a Chagga cave and a village cultural visit on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. From Moshi it takes about 6–8 hours and costs from $80 per person for five. It is not the Kilimanjaro hike, and the climb back is the hardest part.

The number that matters: the climb back up takes about 30–60 minutes, depending on your pace, the trail and your fitness. The descent to the falls is steep and you return the same way on foot.

Price by group size

Private trip, USD. The $80 price applies to a group of five.
Group sizePrice per personGroup total
1 person$120 pp$120
2 people$100 pp$200
3 people$90 pp$270
4 people$85 pp$340
5 people$80 pp$400

Worked example: two people pay $100 each, so the group total is $200.

The more people travelling together, the lower the price per person.

Marangu Waterfalls vs the Kilimanjaro hike

What makes this trip different: we do not go inside Kilimanjaro National Park on this trip. You visit Ndoro Falls and a real Chagga cave on the lower slopes.

This is not the Kilimanjaro hike. The Marangu Kilimanjaro Day Hike to Mandara Hut is a separate product with its own pricing, so read both columns before you choose.

Which Marangu or Moshi day trip fits your plans?

Still deciding? Compare this trip with the alternatives below before booking. Our guide Marangu Waterfalls Day Trip: What To Expect 2026 explains the walk in more depth.

Choose this if…

  • You want a waterfall plus Chagga culture on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes
  • You are happy to walk down a steep trail and climb back up
  • You want a private day with a driver-guide

Choose something else if…

Safety and suitability

  • Difficulty is moderate. The trail drops steeply to the falls and the climb back is the most demanding part.
  • Wear hiking shoes or trainers with good grip. Avoid smooth-soled shoes and sandals on the trail.
  • Expect slippery or muddy sections after rain. Allow rest stops on the way back up.
  • Swimming is not guaranteed. It is considered only when site rules allow it and your guide judges the conditions suitable. Current, debris, water clarity and recent rain all affect the decision. Do not enter the water unless your guide approves.
  • The cave visit is optional if enclosed spaces make you uncomfortable.
  • If you have mobility limits, back, heart or breathing conditions, or are pregnant, check with your doctor and tell Kilimania before booking.

Accessibility: this trail has steep sections and is not suitable for wheelchairs or guests with limited mobility. See the accessible day trips guide for easier options.

Children are welcome on many vehicle-based day trips, but hiking, walking safaris, canoeing and mountain activities have different safety requirements. Confirm your child’s age with Kilimania before booking. Suitability depends on the child’s age, walking ability, fitness and supervision on a steep trail.

Practical information

Field note from Sabinus

Sabinus Msimba, Senior Mountain Guide · April–May 2026, long rains

In the long rains the Ndoro Falls pool carried more debris from upstream farms and had a stronger current than usual. The trail was muddier, and one guest in smooth-soled sneakers struggled on the climb back.

Why it matters: rain changes both the swimming decision and the trail. Wear shoes with grip and let your guide make the swimming call at the water. This describes one season, not every visit. Source: Kilimania’s Marangu Waterfalls guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the Kilimanjaro hike?

No. This trip visits a waterfall and a Chagga cultural stop on the lower slopes around Marangu village. The hike to Mandara Hut is a separate product with its own pricing and difficulty. See the Marangu Kilimanjaro Day Hike to Mandara Hut if the mountain trail is what you want.

Which waterfall do you visit, and can I swim?

Ndoro Falls, also known locally as Kinukamori or Marangu Waterfalls. Swimming is never promised. It is considered only when site rules allow it and your guide judges the current, water clarity, debris and weather suitable, and after heavy rain it may not be safe even when the falls look impressive.

How steep is the walk back?

The trail drops steeply to the falls. Expect about 30–60 minutes on foot each way, and about 30–60 minutes for the climb back, depending on pace, trail conditions and fitness. Wear shoes with good grip, rest when you need to, and follow your guide.

Is the cultural part included?

Yes. The day includes a Chagga cave visit, a village walk and a cultural activity with your guide. The cave can be skipped if you are uncomfortable in enclosed spaces. Tell your guide or Kilimania beforehand so the plan suits you.

How much does the trip cost?

The price starts from $80 per person for a private group of five. A solo traveller pays $120, two people pay $100 each ($200 total), three pay $90 each, and four pay $85 each. Groups above five get a quotation from Kilimania.

Can I start from Arusha?

Yes. Arusha pick-up is available. The drive from Arusha is 2.5–3 hours, compared with 45–60 minutes from Moshi. The Arusha pick-up price is confirmed in your quote, so send your hotel name with your enquiry.

How long is the full day trip?

From Moshi, plan for about 6–8 hours including the drive, with departure typically around 08:00. From Arusha the day is longer because the drive is 2.5–3 hours each way, so the exact schedule is confirmed in your quote before you book.

Can I bring children?

Suitability depends on the child’s age, walking ability, fitness and supervision, because of the steep descent and uphill return. Tell Kilimania your child’s age when you enquire and we will advise. The cave visit and swimming stay optional.
