Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the 7-day Shira Route itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
- Description: Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. After settling in, you will meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing and equipment check. This session will cover all the essential information needed for your climb and give you an opportunity to ask any questions.

Day 2: Moshi to Shira Gate to Shira Camp 1
- Elevation: 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) to 3,500 meters (11,483 feet)
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 8 km
- Habitat: Heather Moorland
- Description: After breakfast, depart from Moshi and enjoy a scenic drive to the Londorossi Gate for registration. From here, proceed to Shira Gate, where your trek begins. The day’s hike starts in the heather moorlands, with views of the Shira Plateau spreading out before you. The trail is moderately easy, giving you time to adjust to the altitude. Arrive at Shira Camp 1 in the afternoon, with ample time to explore the surroundings and enjoy your first night under the stars.

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2
- Elevation: 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) to 3,850 meters (12,631 feet)

- Description: Today’s trek is a gentle ascent across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. The trail gradually climbs eastward, enjoying expansive views of the majestic Kibo Peak ahead. Along the way, take in the unique high-altitude flora and fauna, including giant groundsels and lobelias. Arrive at Shira Camp 2 in the afternoon, with time to rest and acclimatize.

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

- Description: This is a critical acclimatization day as you ascend to the Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation standing at 4,600 meters. The hike is longer and more challenging, but reaching Lava Tower offers stunning views and an excellent opportunity to adjust to the altitude. After spending some time here, you will descend into the Barranco Valley, which will help your body acclimatize further. The day ends at Barranco Camp, situated in a stunning valley beneath the Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) to 4,200 meters (13,780 feet)

- Description: Begin the day with an exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, a 257-meter rock face that looks more intimidating than it is. The trail winds up steeply, using hands at times for support, but the views from the top are well worth the effort. After conquering the wall, the trail undulates through a series of hills and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, where you will rest for the night.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) to 4,640 meters (15,223 feet)

- Description: Today’s hike is relatively short but steep, leading up to Barafu Camp, the base camp for summit attempts. The route passes through a desolate landscape of alpine desert, marked by volcanic boulders. Upon arrival, your guide will brief you on the upcoming summit night. Spend the afternoon resting and preparing your gear. An early dinner will be served as you aim to rest before your midnight ascent.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 4,640 meters (15,223 feet) to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) to 3,100 meters (10,171 feet)
- Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
- Distance: 17 km
- Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
- Description: Around midnight, begin your final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This leg of the trek is the most physically and mentally challenging, taking you over rocky terrain and steep switchbacks. As dawn approaches, you will reach Stella Point (5,739 meters) and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the roof of Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

- Description: A leisurely hike through lush rainforest leads you down to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
