The Shira Route is a scenic and less-crowded trail that offers trekkers a unique experience on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting at a higher elevation than other routes, it provides a distinct advantage for those seeking a gradual acclimatization schedule. The trail traverses across the Shira Plateau, with panoramic views of Kibo Peak and diverse ecosystems, making it a popular choice among experienced climbers looking for a quieter trek. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the 7-day Shira Route itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

  • Description: Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. After settling in, you will meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing and equipment check. This session will cover all the essential information needed for your climb and give you an opportunity to ask any questions.
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi
  • Meals Provided: Dinner

Day 2: Moshi to Shira Gate to Shira Camp 1

  • Elevation: 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) to 3,500 meters (11,483 feet)
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Habitat: Heather Moorland
  • Description: After breakfast, depart from Moshi and enjoy a scenic drive to the Londorossi Gate for registration. From here, proceed to Shira Gate, where your trek begins. The day’s hike starts in the heather moorlands, with views of the Shira Plateau spreading out before you. The trail is moderately easy, giving you time to adjust to the altitude. Arrive at Shira Camp 1 in the afternoon, with ample time to explore the surroundings and enjoy your first night under the stars.
  • Accommodation: Shira Camp 1
  • Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2

  • Habitat: Alpine Moorland
  • Description: Today’s trek is a gentle ascent across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. The trail gradually climbs eastward, enjoying expansive views of the majestic Kibo Peak ahead. Along the way, take in the unique high-altitude flora and fauna, including giant groundsels and lobelias. Arrive at Shira Camp 2 in the afternoon, with time to rest and acclimatize.

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Habitat: Semi-Desert
  • Description: This is a critical acclimatization day as you ascend to the Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation standing at 4,600 meters. The hike is longer and more challenging, but reaching Lava Tower offers stunning views and an excellent opportunity to adjust to the altitude. After spending some time here, you will descend into the Barranco Valley, which will help your body acclimatize further. After conquering the wall, the trail undulates through a series of hills and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, where you will rest for the night.
